Is a work life balance achievable?
Everyone always seems to be striving for work life balance. I personally don’t believe there is a balance that you can achieve. It is never going to be 50% work/ 50% life. One will always need to take precedence over the other.
It may change from week to week with which one takes priority but there’s never going to be an even work life balance. There is always mom guilt associated with this. If you are working you are thinking about your kids. If you are with your kids you are thinking about work. You need to let go of the guilt and stay in the moment of what you are doing. You will be more productive and then not feel the guilt when you switch from work to home or home to work.
Once you lose the guilt, you need to get organized. If you aren’t organized then you can’t prioritize. I love having my calendar on my phone but I also have a planner. It’s nice to write it down and see everything you have going on in one shot. There’s also something to be said about writing stuff down. You don’t forget what you wrote down. Make sure you are organized and you actually stick to your calendar. If you don’t stick to it then there really isn’t a reason to get organized.
The first thing you need to do each week is to prioritize your time. Figure out what you have going on for the week and list it in order of importance. This could be work related, family related, exercise etc. Make sure the list of priorities aligns with your goals or family life. If they don’t then you need to re-evaluate why they are on your list. If you know what your work and home goals are you can prioritize according to those goals. One week it may be important for you to go to your son’s baseball event while the next week you may need to focus on a launch at work.
Start with the items that are non-negotiable and prioritize them by importance. From there you can add in items that aren’t as important and fit them in where you can. Don’t strive for perfectionism. It won’t always be perfect and you can’t predict things that will happen while you work towards your goals. Focus on the list of priorities and getting them done. Don’t forget to leave time for yourself to sleep, eat and exercise if that is a priority(it should be!). Many times moms forget to take care of themselves. If you don’t take care of yourself then you can’t take care of everything else in your life. It will all catch up to you. Take an hour to nap, read a book, watch a TV show etc. Whatever helps you unwind and take care of yourself.
If you stick to the schedule you create and take time for yourself you will be able to create a life that you can work with and has the right balance for you.
