A vacation to Hawaii can be expensive. We took two trips to Hawaii. The first one was for our honeymoon and the second one we went back a few years later. Our second trip ended up being a LOT less expensive once we figured out a few things we could change. Here are 4 ways to save when traveling to Hawaii on a budget.
- Hotel/Condo – Rent a condo instead of staying in a hotel. The first time we went to Maui we stayed at the Sheraton on Ka’anapali Beach. It was wonderful and beautiful and super expensive. The second time we went we rented a condo on the golf course directly across the street from the Sheraton. We were a 10 minute walk across the golf course to the beach. We found our condo on VRBO and paid a quarter of what we paid for the hotel. The condo was a very nice condo with a spacious living area and an awesome balcony.
- Food – Since we rented a condo the second time around we had a kitchen. A kitchen means you can go grocery shopping and cook your meals instead of eating out for all of them. The food is expensive on Maui regardless of whether or not you go out or cook. Expect higher grocery prices than what you are used to. However, grocery shopping will still save you money over eating out for every meal. It was also nice to just relax and eat on our balcony. When we wanted something quick and didn’t want to cook we grabbed sushi. There are some great pit stops for sushi on the islands (hello fresh fish!). There are also some great restaurants on Maui so make sure to get out for some of your meals!
- Activities – Don’t rent snorkel equipment from the hotels or anyone on the beach. We drove into Lahaina and rented equipment. It ended up costing us the same amount to rent for a week as it would have renting for a day from someone on the beach.
- Airfare – flying to Hawaii is expensive. Try scheduling your vacation during non-peak times. We went at the end of September once kids were back at school. The airfare ended up being half of what it would have cost us going in the summer. Do your research and find out what the lowest airfare can be from your location and watch the airfare. I would log in twice a day to see where airfare was at and once it hit a low price we purchased.
